Weevils. Just the name pronounces disgust. Imagine waking up to noticing a container containing rice infested with these tiny pests running all over. You may have continued washing the rice and filtering these weevils before cooking, but there are dangerous effects of the weevils causing harm to your food as well as being poisonous content. Often called flour bugs, because that is where they can be found, there are several types of weevil, including rice weevils, seed weevils, granary/grain weevils, maise weevils, and bean/pea/seed weevils.
These weevils will infest your cereals by living and feeding inside the food. The weevils chew a hole into a seed or grain kernel and deposits an egg inside, then seals up the opening, leaving the egg behind. When the egg hatches (inside the grain/seed), the larva feeds on the inside until it is fully grown. Once fully developed, the adult weevil eats its way out of the grain/seed.
Because of its long life and its ability to fly, the rice weevil is considered to be the most destructive, but all the other weevils can cause extensive damage to stored foods. When they infest grain that is stored in bins/ containers and remains undisturbed, they can destroy the food. At home, weevils can be on packaged foods, or they can come in from outside. Once inside, a population can grow and expand to food items stored nearby if not controlled.
Store grains and other cereals in dry areas, and always throw out any food where you find weevils. Clear any cupboards where you’ve found weevils and be sure you’ve removed all larvae.
You should avoid using chemical treatments to get rid of weevils because most are not safe to use around food. It is unsafe to have any cereals with weevils before cooking. Ensure you thoroughly check, wash and then boil the rice.
