Jaivik Bharat – Empowering India’s Organic Revolution

Introduction: Why “Jaivik Bharat” Matters

India’s organic food industry is booming—but with growth comes challenges: mislabeling, misleading claims, and consumer skepticism. To address these issues, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) introduced the Jaivik Bharat logo in December 2017—as a trustworthy symbol to help consumers identify genuine organic products.

1. What Is Jaivik Bharat?

Jaivik Bharat, literally meaning “Organic India,” is a unified logo introduced by FSSAI, designed to distinguish certified organic products from non-organic ones.  Adorned with a circle, a leaf, and a tick, the design signifies holistic wellness, nature, and certification integrity, respectively.

2. Legal and Regulatory Underpinnings

Jaivik Bharat certification stems from two main regulatory frameworks in India:

  • National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP): Overseen by APEDA, it manages certification for export-bound and domestic organic products.
  • Participatory Guarantee System (PGS-India): A community-based, low-cost certification model suited for smallholder farmers targeting domestic markets.

These systems operate under the Food Safety and Standards (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017, backed by the Food Safety Standards Act, 2006.

3. Who Can Use the Logo?

Organic producers holding a valid NPOP or PGS-India certification can apply to use the Jaivik Bharat logo on their packaging. FSSAI mandates that no organic product is to be sold without it. Violations may result in license or registration suspension.

4. Indian Organic Integrity Database

To bolster trust and transparency, FSSAI, in collaboration with APEDA and PGS-India, set up the Indian Organic Integrity Database. Consumers and stakeholders can verify:

  • Product authenticity
  • Producer credentials
  • Certification status
  • Availability by region

This portal is a key tool in empowering informed consumer choices.

5. The Need for the Logo: Tackling Fraud & Building Trust

Before this initiative, the organic market was rife with confusion and exploitation. The Jaivik Bharat logo serves as a visual assurance of quality, helping buyers distinguish genuine organic food—just as green and red dots do for vegetarian and non-vegetarian products.

6. Impact and Industry Response

The launch of Jaivik Bharat significantly boosted consumer awareness and industry accountability. Industry experts urged the government to further promote the logo to deepen trust in the sector.
Its ongoing visibility in the media — most recently noted in discussions about organic farming trends — shows how central it has become to the organic movement in India.
